Pioneer Electric Cooperative understands today’s youth are tomorrow’s leaders. The Cooperative believes very strongly in this, so to help teach our future leaders and keep them safe, we offer some programs to educate and encourage them while they are young. |
4-H
Each fall Pioneer co-sponsors the 4-H youth advisors' banquets in Champaign,
Miami and Shelby counties. Our reason for supporting these events is to recognize
others who are willing to work with and for the youth of our area. Pioneer and
the other OREC member cooperatives also sponsor the 4-H Health & Safety Speaking
Contest each year. |

Electric
Safety Education
Recent Safety Demonstrations
Pioneer understands knowing how to use electrical power safely is even more important than knowing how to use it efficiently. Since just about anything we do in our daily lives involves electricity, learning about electrical safety is a must––especially for young children. That is why Pioneer has developed a safety education program for the members and public. The program features a “hot line” safety demonstration used for schools, civic groups, scout meetings, paramedic training and other organizations. The demonstration illustrates the potential dangers of objects coming into contact with power lines. We also have a section on our website entitled The Electric Universe. This is an educational resource on the web containing helpful information about electricity for students, teachers and adults in general.

Scholarships
Pioneer also awards four scholarships each spring to outstanding seniors. The
students are selected in an application and interview process. The young man and
young woman chosen to receive the top two Pioneer awards are then eligible to
compete with students from the other electric cooperatives in the state for additional
scholarship money. The Scholarship Competition kicks off after the first of the new year. Contact
us if you have questions about the Scholarship program.

Youth
Tour
Each year, Pioneer sponsors an all-expense paid trip to
our nation's capital for one or two accomplished high school sophomores or juniors. The
trip is part of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association's annual Youth
Tour week, held each year in mid-June. The experience is a once-in-a-lifetime
opportunity for students to see and tour national monuments and museums, to meet
their congressional representatives and to assemble with other students from all
over the country. Students and their parents need not be Pioneer members to apply. The Youth Tour Competition kicks off October 1.
