Air
infiltration is a major factor in your home's heating and
cooling costs. In the winter, cold air seeps into your house,
replacing warm air that escapes through leaks in your home.
In the summer, the opposite occurs. Air leakage is the result
of pressure differences between the inside and the outside
of your house, and can be caused by temperature differences,
wind, living habits and exhaust appliance use such as bathroom
fans, range hoods and dryer vents.
Air
sealing specialist in the past few years have developed
more sophisticated ways to determine how much leakage is
in a house, where that leakage is and how tightening a house
will affect house pressures.
The
blower door is a tool that measures air leakage in your
house. It consists of a fan that fits into a doorframe.
The instruments on the blower door measure how much air
the fan must blow to make the house reach a certain air
pressure. Air will then rush through all leaks in the house,
which a technician can help you locate and seal. The blower
door can also be used to measure leakage in the heating
and cooling ducts.
