Because heating and cooling usage and costs are directly affected by how well a building is insulated, Pioneer recommends homeowners take a good look at their home's thermal envelope, or insulation value. Check the insulation in your attic, ceilings, exterior and basement walls, floors and crawl spaces to see if it meets the levels recommended for your area.

The Department of Energy and Oak Ridge National Labatory recommends ranges of R-Value based on local heating and cooling costs and climate conditions in different areas of the nation. Click here to view their recommendations for what levels are recommended for your area. (The information on this link is a few years old and should be looked at for recommendations only. Updated information could recommend higher levels. )

There are many different types of insulation available today to make your home's thermal envelope more resistant to higher utility bills. Using a high-density insulation such as foam board, cellulose insulation (wet spray), expandable foam, or polyurethane foam with fiberglass batt will help make your home more energy efficient and will reduce your utility bills.
