Pioneer
recommends the use of compact fluorescent light bulbs for
home lighting use. Compact fluorescent (CF) bulbs use only
25 to 33% as much electricity as incandescent bulbs and
can last ten times longer. Although compact fluorescent
bulbs are more expensive to purchase, the energy savings
from each bulb over its lifetime (approximately 5 years)
is usually $30 to $40.
CF bulbs
will fit perfectly in your standard incandescent sockets
and will produce a warm, pleasing light. There are, however,
a few limitations on the use of CF bulbs. CF bulbs that
are non-dimmable should never be used with a dimmer switch,
as it can pose a fire hazard. There are CF bulbs currently
available that are compatible with incandescent dimmers,
so be sure to read packages carefully. CF bulbs are also
not recommended for use with motion sensors or mechanical
timers, as the frequent on/off switching will significantly
shorten the life of the bulb. But for most home lighting
uses, CF bulbs are a great way to save lots of energy-and
money.
