Welcome to your Cooperative! Please take a moment to complete a brief survey. Newly completed surveys are entered into a drawing each month with the winner receiving a $25 bill credit. (This survey is for new members only.) The information will be used only by Pioneer Electric Cooperative, and will
not be sold or distributed to other firms.
Pioneer Electric Cooperative was formed by the people in rural Champaign, Miami and Shelby counties to provide electric service for themselves. The Cooperative is a private business owned by the nearly 16,500 member-owners it serves. Pioneer is committed to providing high quality and responsive service at competitive prices consistent with sound business practices. Pioneer is a not-for-profit business and hence does not pay income tax. However, we do pay property, excise, sales, use and payroll taxes in excess of $2 and a half million annually.
As a member you are one of over a quarter million Ohioans who own their electric company. There are 24 electric cooperatives in the state covering nearly 40% of the land mass in 77 counties. Ohio’s electric cooperatives serve nearly 380,000 homes and businesses and combined have over 48,000 miles of distribution lines. All are companies directed by their member-owners. We operate as not-for-profit organizations in which any margins earned are returned to the owners in the form of capital credits.
There are major differences between electric cooperatives and investor-owned utilities. The investor-owned utilities that focus on profit must try to serve both their shareholders and their customers. Pioneer has only our members, who are also the owners, to answer to. Cooperatives, are under the direct control of members who elect trustees to oversee cooperative operations. Pioneer bases every decision made on the philosophy of doing what is in the best interest of our member-owners.
